review 1: I am just starting to get my feet wet with middle-grade books and this was a wonderful new book to sink my reading teeth into! This is a tale that both kids and adults would love. The Sunday Times calls it a "Small Miracle of a Book" and I completely agree. Mary is such a well-drawn character. I feel that I am back in Ireland ready for a proper adventure and fully immersed in her world of worry and delight. For ages 7+
review 2: "A Greyhound of a Girl" - written by Roddy Doyle and published in 2012. Doyle visits the centuries old theme of death as young Mary's well-loved grandmother Emer edges closer to her final breath. The subject is handled with a gentle tone, but the inevitability is not ignored. Virtually the only characters in the book are four gene
... morerations of Mary's family, all women, and one just happening to be a ghost.I felt those Neil Gaiman goosebumps when our friendly ghost was first identified as Mary's great-grandmother Tansey, who sadly died of the flu when her children were quite young. Tansey's ties to her family are so strong that she takes a ghostly form to watch over them. She tells Mary and her mother, "...I felt guilty and very unsettled. I'd left things unfinished, not properly looked after."Doyle's book is heavy on dialogue and light on action, so it may not appeal to all middle grade readers. Those that embrace it though will experience an uncomplicated story of life and death with a sweet ghostly touch. less

Sweet generational tale with a little supernatural element and a wonderfully sassy 12 year old.
