review 1: Some great anecdotes in this "biography lite" collection. The message seems to be that gay marriage has been with us for forever, we just didn't know it. Learned a bit about some really interesting lives and skipped a couple of sections of people I'd never heard of. Probably makes a good jumping off point for more reading on the bios that catch your interest. I originally picked it up as research on Gertrude Stein for my WIP on Paris in 1926.
review 2: I have to agree with other reviewers that the writing style was very academic and dry. I wished that the author had included how open some of these couples were and more on how those around them accepted or did not accept these outlaw marriages, particularly with the couples who were together before the mid 20th
... more century. That would have added another interesting angle to their stories, especially since many people in same-sex relationships even today deal with rejection from family members. less
