review 1: Some was over my head, but a lot I liked and agree with. I especially remember the part about abortion. He talks about being a young med school resident and there is one premature baby born, and they are doing everything to save the baby. That same day there is another baby about the same age as this premature baby, however this baby is being aborted and nothing is being done for this baby. He talks about how a society that does not value human life is in trouble.
review 2: The most awesome thing about this book is that it's a book about politics, by a politician, and it is clearly written with distinct opinions on relevant issues. Ron Paul strongly supports putting our federal government back in the place that was defined for it by the US Constitution and
... morehanding a majority of power to individuals and states. I agree with the majority of his opinions but I won't enumerate them here. I do see the main difficulty is in rooting out the socialist programs that we all pay for and the fact that a major segment of our working class is employed by the government. But enough of that. The book is split into 50 chapters. Each chapter covers an area of politics that has been or should be contentious. With the book running about 300 pages that averages just 6 pages per chapter so you can see there's no room for idle banter. The chapters are arranged alphabetically so it makes easy reference although that means it starts with the hot-button issue of abortion. This is a somewhat unfortunate choice as the half who disagree might disregard the rest of what is an exceptionally clear vision of social justice. One of the key points in this book is also made in another of my favorite books, "Man's Search for Meaning". That is, to expect freedom one must accept responsibility. The federal government should not have to be there to bail you out after a storm or when you lose your job. Taking that responsibility to work things out for yourself should also give you the freedom to live free of all the invisible shackles that bind us to our high-tech fractional reserve slavery.I'll end with a disagreement over Ron Paul's view on energy. It seems to be one area where he contradicts his own opinion of removing government controls and allowing the free market to drive innovation. He sees the trouble of our oil addiction and believes the answer is to return to nuclear power. I believe the future of energy security lies in residential generation and getting off-grid. Truth be told, I believe that energy is free and it is simply a matter of intelligent conversion technologies. Energy inventions and their creators have been suppressed for decades. Give them liberty. And by all means, read this book. less
