review 1: With the recent disclosures of the CIA's off the books misbehavior this down to earth account of the War on Terror from the ground level perspectives of key decision makers, operatives and accidental victims is compulsory reading. Suskind nails it in an account that has become more compelling and relevant since he penned it in 2008. The takedown of Benazir Bhutto, the obsessive efforts to manufacture evidence of Iraq's non- existent nuclear arsenal and the legal limbo of Guantanamo are recounted in disturbing, irrefutable detail. Small wonder the author has drawn fire from White House spin doctors and had some of his research confiscated. But beneath all the revelations there are isolated pockets of hope that America's leaders may rediscover their moral compass and dese... morerve the mantle they lay claim to.
review 2: I guess I'm not a political junkie. I made myself finish reading this since I'd purchased it for my nook. I attribute part of my disillusionment with the fact that all of this is ancient history. When the text is predictable, I tend to lose interest. No doubt about it, Suskind knows what he's writing about and writes well. I don't disagree with his thesis, either, and would even go so far as to say that Suskind validates many of my beliefs. However, this was not the provocative book I'd been led to believe it was. less
