review 1: Very enjoyable, funny memoir of a year and a half spent in Paris as a Paris-loving expat. The most laugh out loud moments were those quirks of language between the native French speakers and our hero who valiantly tries to communicate with them in their language and his. I also appreciated the cultural observations, though it helps to know the events of the book take place in 2007 and 2008, before the financial crisis.

I also had the pleasure of listening to a reading of this book by Rosecrans Baldwin himself at the Writer's Conference in Greeley, Colorado hosted by the English Department at UNC. He has an interesting and different perspective of French culture and living based off his experiences living and working ... morein Paris for two years. Rosecrans Baldwin explains how from the time he was young he has always wanted to go to France in general and as we all do has romanticism ideals of how or what to expect in a city one has not ventured to yet and how easily your expectations fall short on not just one level but several. He doesn't discount or dismiss his living experiences living in France just emphasizes a huge difference in mannerisms, behavior, language barrier in both social and work dynamic and ethics compared to American culture and society. He graciously delivers syntax with a playful and comedic approach keeping the reader more curious and engaged until the end of his adventure in the City of Lights. less
