review 1: If you are one of those people who buys picture books for your partner to demonstrate your love for them, then this is the book for you. If you are one of those people who buys picture books because the artwork is so exquisite, then this is the book for you. If you are one of those people who still buys picture books for your children (even though they are 'too old') because picture books allow you to remember how wonderful it is to be the age when images and text make magic happen, then this is the book for you. And if you are lucky enough to have a bookstore gift card leftover from your birthday this week and want a new picture book that makes your heart swell, then this is the book for you.Paul meets Bernadette in the fish bowl that he lives in and his world changes.... more Every page of this book has something that will catch your eye and draw you in. Paul falls in love for Bernadette's worldview and you can't help but do so as well. I had to physically restrain myself from driving straight to the pet store to buy goldfish after buying this book even though we all know that eventually 'Paul' and 'Bernadette' would become way too much work for me like all pets do. But I almost did go to the pet store to buy them! The book moved me to almost purchase pets. It's a sweet book and the paintings are some of the most lovely I've ever seen. The colour palette captivated me in a way that I haven't seen in a long time and I checked the copy out of our library as soon as I saw it and brought it home to read to our family (including the guinea pigs - to remind them of how lucky they are to have each other) and will always be glad I did. This IS the book for you AND if you are in a pinch for a hostess gift; consider Paul Meets Bernadette.
review 2: Silly and sweet, but I think this is a picture book better for caregiver and individual child story time than for a library story time with several participants. There are several misunderstandings about what Paul and Bernadette are looking at, and while that humor isn't so mature it can only be enjoyed by adults, I think it might be difficult to manage 25 children exclaiming "That's a NEWSPAPER!"I really liked the look of this one. The paintings (reproduced so well I thought I'd be able to feel the brushstrokes) and their brilliant colors were lovely and very eye-catching. I think this one might be ideal for bedtime. less

Gorgeous oil paintings, but I think the text would just confuse my 1st graders.
