review 1: A humorous and interesting description of words. Like reading a dictionary with commentary, root words and history on each word. I was surprised to be so entertained by an alphabetical list of words. I plan to look for more books by this author. It is not a book you can read for hours on end. I had to read the book a few pages at a time to be able to absorb all the information. Extremely interesting and worth reading.
review 2: My admiration goes out to anyone who can write a dictionary, exploring the depths and meanings of words, explaining their uses and misuses, with current and historical examples, including word derivations, comparing those meanings to other words having similar histories and those that seem related, but veered off to an alternate bra... morench away from their Indo-European roots. He takes it to levels rarely found, even to connect words and their meanings through the sounds that they make, the way consonants and vowels have an effect on the feeling conveyed by a word and other words like it. I have respect for anyone who quotes his six favorite reference dictionaries at the beginning of this work, and continues through its entirety with cross references to them, along with a depth of thought, connecting meanings, usages, derivations, sounds, and feelings - all with a sense of humor.
