review 1: It's not fair, of course, to compare this to Band of Brothers, since (Pacific theater and Marine Corps aside) it's a completely different type of book: a first-person narrative, not a (comparatively) objective historical account. But, as a reading experience of men in war, it's hard not to compare this to both BoB and its many first-person "spinoffs." And in my mind, it falls short, both as a gripping read and a historical journey, simply because of the impersonal and, again, in my opinion, dry voice.
review 2: This was excellent! While I have read a number of Pacific War memoirs, I am very fond of Burgin's character and perspective throughout. He is very aware that there are a many memoirs similar to his but he also believes that each story is unique and impor... moretant. I admire his passion and desire for writing this work and for honoring those who served with him by telling his story. Very humble and kind hearted man. less
