review 1: I love this gem of a novella. Mother dearest thinks if she can get her shy, scarred son seduced, he’ll then be ready to marry (a woman of the right sort, of course) and beget grandchildren. Priming the pump, as it were. Angelina is no Angel, even if that becomes her nickname. I really liked that she was not a missish, scared virgin, but a woman who, while young, already had a man or two in her past. Sometimes pleasant, sometimes disappointing. (Who hasn’t?) She likes sex, she’s broke, and she finds this tall, muscular man extremely attractive. Triple win!John (or Georgie, as his mother likes to call him) is a former soldier, working out his PTSD through restoring his tumbledown castle in peaceful solitude. Although she’s a bit annoying, he’s drawn to Angelina, a... morend learns to enjoy her company. In and out of the makeshift bed.His dog even likes, her, too.Angelina has Issues of her own to work out. Falling in love is no part of her plan, but... hey, this is a romance. We know how it’s got to end, but it gets there in a particularly sweet and satisfying way, on the part of both John and Angelina, with a few twists and turns along the way.
review 2: What a lovely story. This is not your typical historical romance. There are no balls, no ballgowns, no cardsharps and definitely no simpering young misses. There is only the lovely and lyrical meeting of Angelina and John. This is a story to savor, one that is built in the silences between the courtesan and the Captain as they learn of each other. There are no secrets between them, but one; that the Captain's mother has paid the courtesan to be mistress to her son.Rooted in the reality of a castle being brought back from the brink of ruin, Angelina realizes at the beginning that while John may not want a lover, he needs a friend. Patiently, with gentleness, laughter, and her open forthrightness, Angelina allows John to divest himself of the horrors of war and open himself to the possibilities of the world they have created.Beautifully written, this is a story that will linger in your heart. less
