review 1: Saki is often called one of the masters of short story writing and having finally read him I entirely agree with that distinction, however (and this is less a fault of the author than it is my own shortcoming) I am, admittedly, unfamiliar with a lot of the quips and references he made in his stories, so much of the humor was lost on me. However, Saki's "comedy of errors" approach to many of his stories and his undeniably clever approach is more than enough to make for an enjoyable read, even if the source of humor is periodically outdated.
review 2: If you love that cutting, sardonic wit of the Brits (think any one of Maggie Smith's latest incarnations), you will revel in the evil glee and hilarity that Saki produces in his short, potent stories. If you could
... moresomehow combine the absurd artistic vision of Dali, and blend it with the dark morality of Flannery O'Connor and then spice it up with the violent humor of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, you'd come close to resurrecting the unique mind of H.H. Munro. These short stories are well-suited to feed the current appetite for black humor. Of course, Saki is the top of the heap. Every single line of every single page is razor-sharp and quotable. Do not miss this fantastic collection. It will have you chuckling like a baby-eating hyena. less

The majority of these stories are perfect gems, glinting with misanthropic hilarity.

Genius. I loved torturing my seventh-grade students with some of these endings!
