review 1: This simple picture book is the sweet story of the friendship between a penguin and a pinecone. The simple message at the end of the book is, "When you give love… it grows." The penguin and the pinecone have to live in different places to survive, but somehow they still meet and take care of each other. The color illustrations allow even non-readers to easily follow along with the story line. While the abstract idea that the pinecone grew into a large pine tree might be difficult for very young children to grasp, the idea that the penguin and the pinecone love each other is clearly shown. This was a story that both my 2-year-old and my 9-year-old both enjoyed, just on different levels.
review 2: Penguin finds a pinecone and they become best friends. Peng... moreuin knits it a scarf, takes it sledging, and then becomes worried when pinecone sneezes. Penguin then sets off on a journey to take Pinecone home to the forest, where it can go big and strong. Penguin gets Pinecone settled in his new home, while he returns to his ice home. After waiting and wondering about his friend, Penguin returns to the forest and finds Pinecone has “grown” from Penguin’s love. Penguin shows the same love and concern for pinecone that young children show for their favorite stuffed animal or doll. He also has the same worries as kids do about being apart from someone who they love. This is a series of book about a cute penguin that embarks on adventures and experiences new places through the lens of a young child. The illustrations are simple, colorful, child-like and perfect for storytime for children in KS1. less
