review 1: This book was a random pick as I browsed the library aisles. The cover summary was intriguing; it seemed to be the preppy lifestyle, old fashioned 50’s type attitude with the cocktails, the literary world, all the nice ingredients for a perfect life. And then you wake up. I couldn’t put it down. But it was disturbing…I got so aggravated at this woman for not seeing the real world. Forgetting totally that she had a controlling mother, she was very religious and seemed to have the old 50’s goody mentality, who knows what else. To me this was like watching a train wreck that you could not stop watching. A controlling husband, the meek and mild housefrau….mind you a house wife whose husband did everything way better than she could. The alarm went off. Yet she t... morehought she could fix it. A nightmare of a marriage as far I’m concerned, yet she persevered. Sigh...All in all…I had to remind myself, truth is always stranger than fiction. A compelling story nonetheless.
review 2: This is a very well-written memoir of a marriage that was richly blessed, idyllic, and filled with pain and sorrow. The author writes eloquently and simply about her complicated husband - there was so much that they shared; love, intelligent conversation, music, dancing, literature - but there was also a part of her husband that he held back. Lots of love and lots of anger - the writer conveys her memories without seemingly to breach their intimacy. Brady decides to share her story after secrets are revealed upon her husband's death, leading her to question his love for her. All relationships are complicated, hopefully wonderfully so - and this marriage was complex. There is something to be learned in this book for anyone in a committed relationship. less

Not sure why she needed to tell this story. Seemed quite self serving.
