review 1: I love the history and ideas in this book; I really think my daughter would benefit from this teaching approach (the story of how Khan started this project by teaching his cousin--his cousin's situation and attitude are almost exactly like my daughter's, minus the desire to get into a science field later in life). My biggest problem in implementing this on the home front will be my daughter's motivation in doing this. She feels she puts in her time at school and has had enough work and frustration by the time she gets home. Judging by the other reviews here, I am not alone in my concern for the factor of student motivation!
review 2: One of the most fascinating books I've read on how we can shape the education system. As a disclaimer, I am a big fan of Khan aca
... moredemy. Most of the time we spend at school is wasted on repetitive lectures driven by a prussian model of learning where industrial needs were put over creativity, innovation, and collaboration - skills that are badly needed in the new economySwiss cheese knowledge is common among students as classes move forward even if the student gets a C in the last subject. So if i got a C in fractions, it is true that I need more help in it...yet now I am supposed to get better grades in Algebra? This is the system that puts gifted students down and turns schools into lotteries. Khan shows a vision where technology aids development by curating and customizing everyone's education to go at a custom pace with each person's strength complementing others' weaknesses. For college, the internship is the main experience. Instead of arcane theories thrown at students, we can use real life experience to aid learning substantially. UWaterloo already does this and its program is already among the top schools despite only being founded relatively recently. The intellectual and the useful is artificial in this day and age...I really liked this book for giving a clear manifesto where we could be...where education is a "fundamental human right"Still, its an incomplete vision focused on the sciences. The humanities is a trickier challenge that requires more thought. less
