review 1: Spot on, well researched, and has the potential to spur educators and parents into re-thinking the current educational system. The book goes over a lot of the issues that plague the current educational system (students split into groups by age, all moving at the same pace, moving on whether or not they understand the material, using test scores as metrics of proficiency), including a detailed account of how this system came about, why the model no longer makes sense (if it ever really did). The book also outlines new models that have been shown to work better than the current ones on pilot groups, and encourages experimentation over maintaining the status quo.
review 2: This book, written by Salman Khan, founder of the Khan Academy, is revolutionary, democrat
... moreic, philanthropic, inspiring, and inventive. Here are some of the simple (maybe not easy), groundbreaking, possible requirements of "a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere:"-video-based, self-paced learning, which reserves teachers/guides for real problem-solving and guiding-mastering the fundamentals before going on (mastery meaning 100% comprehension here)-avoiding the division of "subjects" into separate areas of content and chunks of time when they are really related to each other and interdependent-questioning whether and when "homework" is really necessary-learning by doing, in all the time that is left over when students have taught themselves using state-of-the-art learning software-all ages learning together, making space for older students to take on more responsibility and younger students to learn from peers-the classroom as a "hive of activity" rather than a hushed, orderly place-getting rid of lengthy summer breaks and taking vacations as needed-portfolios and supervisor assessments rather than report cards or transcripts-universities offering real-world apprenticeships/jobs to master a profession or skill, with a base of courses, groups, etc., that can be utilized on the student's "own time"Khan's dream is to spread this kind of education in whatever way works, to all areas of the world, using whatever infrastructure already exists in an area. The idea is NOT to prescribe one approach, one curriculum, and one set of rules that will stay in place forever as the one way to do things. The idea is to be flexible, to change with the changing requirements of our world, and to use a very inexpensive means of offering the same opportunities to everyone, everywhere, starting with the internet. less
