review 1: John Wayne Gacy: Defending a Monster by Sam Amirante and Danny Broderick was a page turner all the way until the end. Having some basic knowledge of Gacy's crimes, I immediately knew after reading a few pages that this book was going to take me in an entirely new direction. There is no doubt about it that Gacy was insane, but rather than a psychiatrist's interpretation of his deeds, Amirante shows how the monster behind the clown costume was able to operate without so much as a hint of suspicion. Besides Gacy, the book touched on the domineering presence of law enforcement during the surveillance and how Gacy was able to manipulate them. Having grown up watching television stations broadcasting out of Chicago, I found it humorous yet sad to learn about the vulture news med... moreia hovering over every aspect of the case, including the author's family. Overall, this book was disturbing, yet enlightening on so many levels. I recommend it to true crime buffs, historians, and just plain ole' Americans! The life of private practice!
review 2: I greatly enjoyed this book. A part of this book details John Wayne Gacy, both his murders and his daily, "normal" life. The other takes place in court, and follows the trials of Gacy's lawyers and the legal battles between the state and the author, Sam Amirante. By the end, I felt sympathy for both the victims of the serial killer, and Gacy himself; it paints a different perspective on the case than average. Definitely a good read, very engaging. less
