review 1: Well I read this book by mere chance as it was left by a friend and I eventually started it months later. But what a revelation! First of all there is the setting which, for a French like me, is both unknown and exotic. Then the story is griping thanks to its resilient heroin you really sympathize with. I do not know if traditional Korean families are still that dictatorial and I would be interested to know. I have a feeling they are since my husband is from India and being a daughter in law there is really no enviable fate.

I do like these stories that take me into a part of history and culture, and this book did give me a sense of what life can be like for women whose life expectations are limited. I do wonder how much things have changed for them, for this book is of a more recent period in time, a point in time where things are changing. How much have they changed for women there? less
