review 1: I enjoyed this book, read it in under 24 hours. The author takes the reader on a quick, stressful, heart-wrenching journey, full of twists and turns, all solutions in an adolescent girl's head to keep her childhood love from marrying a man they both know she doesn't love. I agree with the person who wrote "I wish there was more defiance." I want to see more of their cultural struggles, their interactions with the police, even fears passing them or strangers on the street. I wish the author had filled the story more to anchor the story in Iran, rather than remind us a couple of times throughout the novel. Aside from that, I did enjoy the story of love, loss, life, decisions, and how everything seems impossible when you could lose the one you love as a teenager. The author c... moreaptured that beautifully. I would give the book 3.5 stars, but instead I rounded up snide I enjoyed the love story so immensely.
review 2: Interesting for the Iranian flavors; otherwise tedious for the predictable forbidden-love story between two girls, one unlikeable and the other ridiculously naive (though supposedly intelligent). I enjoyed the supporting characters and cultural details...the one thing this book has going for it is the hook, which is a good one. Shame it was not a more nuanced approach. Multicultural, LGBT issues. less
