review 1: Blaffer Hrdy develops a good argument for the fundamental differences between the way human primates and other primates have developed their empathic and social abilities. In passing this also makes clear why we should expect young mothers to struggle, when they are trying to raise their children alone. We have been rearing children in groups since we became hunter-gatherers. A mother staying home to raise her children on her own is really strange, viewed in this way.
review 2: Hrdy speculates that cooperative social (i.e., food-sharing) and breeding behaviours are key components in the evolution of the genus Homo, both of which are certainly products of the ability to ascertain the intentions of others. Unlike past evolutionary models that tend to emphasize th
... moree seemingly innate violent propensities of Hominins, especially H. sapiens, Hrdy's book demonstrates how social and technological shifts in terms of care-giving and group cohesion facilitated a number of behavioural features that are deemed uniquely human. Additionally, Hrdy addresses the long post-reproductive period seen in human females and explores whether there is support for the Grandmother hypothesis. less
