review 1: This novel was not what I expected at all when I put it on my "To Read" list and ordered it from Better World Books; that said, I did enjoy it, and I didn't struggle to finish it (other than with time constraints. Going back to work full time has dramatically cut down on my pleasure reading, as any hours I'm awake tend to be consumed with mundane grading and reading poorly written student essays as opposed to books of my own choosing), as the plot and characters developed at a decent pace. The book was a solid combination of serious subjects and light tone, which made it enjoyable; however, the author's foreshadowing was about as subtle as my not-quite-six-year-old son's hinting at what he would like for his birthday, which made the novel VERY predictable, and the climact... moreic scenes much less powerful than they could have been. Sarah Healy would benefit from someone helping her pull back in that department, as well as an editor to perhaps help eliminate certain paragraphs which basically serve as neon signs saying, "THIS IS THE ANSWER TO THE BIG QUESTIONS POSED EARLIER IN THE BOOK". As I was thinking about what I would say in this review, I went back and looked through the book quickly again, thinking, maybe she did that on purpose as some sort of dramatic irony, but I couldn't find any indication of that being the case- it is simply a predictable novel because of the way it is written and the way the plot unfolds. At any rate, I did like it, and it was perfectly enjoyable to read because her characters were likable and realistically flawed and fun to get to know.
review 2: There was a lot of my family and my faith and my culture in this book. We have all disappointed our parents with our rejection of their faith. But we struggle to define our journey. We also have old wounds that require careful footsteps at holidays, and someone, if not everyone, ends up angry. Yet we love each other even if we require a continent to separate us and keep us sane. At a time when I am cleaning out books prior to a move, this one will not be going to the book-buyer. This gem will move with me. less
