review 1: My beloved Mammaw passed away in April of this year, after a long struggle with Dementia. While Dementia is not the same as Alzheimer's, they share many of the same scary and heartbreaking features. Sarah Leavitt's book is very honest about how it feels to slowly lose a loved one to these awful illnesses. I think she paid a beautiful homage to her mother, and to herself, in these pages. Perhaps she also shed a little light on the subject, for those who have never had to suffer along with their loved one, when illnesses like this strike.
review 2: Title / Author / Publication Date: Leavitt, S. (2012). Tangles: A story about Alzheimer's, My Mother, and Me. New York: Skyhorse Publishing Books.Genre: Non-Fiction, MemoirFormat: PaperbackPlot summary: Although this b
... moreook is written for an older audience than 10-12 year olds, it’s a unique book in the small world of literature on Alzheimer’s and one that should be included in any catalog. For those individuals who are reluctant readers or more visual learners Tangles is the perfect book because it is both a touching memoir and a graphic novel. Each page is filled with cartoon panels and simple black and white drawings illustrating the non-fiction account of Sarah Leavitt and her mother Midge. Tangles poignantly illustrate the changes a family goes through as Sarah Leavitt’s mother is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. At its heart, the book is about the unbreakable tie between a mother and daughter, despite the stress of Alzheimer’s. This book would be for the more advanced readers, 12 years and up. Considerations or precautions for readers advisory: Some nudity depicted, Alzheimer's disease, and strained family relationships. Review citation: Cornog, M. (2012).
