review 1: To be fair, I read the manuscript when it was being shopped around to publishers, so I haven't read the published version. Regardless, the book blew me away and I cried multiple times while reading it. My only criticism is the title. The original title was something like "My Mom Got Alzheimer's and Died," which I think speaks better to the raw emotional ground covered in this graphic novel. "Tangles" is a little too tame for my tastes. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this book.
review 2: First graphic book I’ve ever read and I really welcomed what Leavitt had to say. I bought the book immediately after I returned to my city from a visit to my elderly mother 1000 km away. She doesn’t have Alzheimer’s, but has aspects of dementia that leave her groping for
... morecommon words and unable to finish a sentence (an ace academic in her younger years – so sad). The episodic format of this memoir is great, I loved the anecdotes, many of which I could relate to, and was grateful for Leavitt finding humour in some of the otherwise distressing situations. Am now buying copies for my siblings. less
