review 1: Very enjoyable read. A beautifully crafted story made up of a blend of happy and sad events in the midst of the man-made human tragedy of war. By about half way through it had me tuning into Shostakovich on Grooveshark to listen to the 7th Symphony. I never listen to classical music but heard it with new appreciation after this book. Don't let that confuse you though; you don't need to be a classical movie buff to enjoy this one.
review 2: Writing a historical novel is difficult, especially when the facts are so well known. The novel is set during the siege of Leningrad; one of the most terrible sieges of all time. I was never overwhelmed by the grief and despair the way the characters were but I felt it nonetheless. The story moves well throughout, the characters are well fleshed out and there are moments of hope and love amidst all the misery. I think any reader will find this book an absorbing read, a difficult but compelling story. less
