review 1: Excellent writing and a strong theme make this book one of the year's best. It is a high school book, a bit mature for middle, but I was appreciative of the depth of the message. Imogen has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and is a bit of a celebrity at her school after an all school demonstration of her skills. But when she is trapped in a diner during a deadly robbery, all her skills don't help her--she freezes. Blaming herself, she thinks she is no longer worthy of the black belt and her instructor agrees, but not for the same reason. Imogen realizes that using the status of a black belt to bolster herself is not the true meaning of being a Tae Kwan Do master. A soul searching and realistic look at how we grow to understand ourselves through adversity. Highly recomme... morended. High school, YA
review 2: Imogen gets her black belt at 16, very young, just a junior in high school, when she experiences a horrible shooting in a diner. The gunman is killed & she is covered in his blood. Hiding under the table, she connects with a teen boy also hiding. Deeply affected & shocked by the violence, she cannot forgive herself for not using her Tae Kwon Do training. She questions the meaning of her entire martial arts mindset & commitment. Additionally, her father has diabetes, her mother is distant, & her brother has de-flowered most all of her friends. This YA psychological drama is about a girl coming to grips & fighting back to health for herself, her family, and her friends. Powerful. less
