review 1: In this book, the author tells the story of how he and his wife came to adopt their two daughters from China. Interspersed with their story are the adoption stories of a number of other families, many of them famous friends of the author who work in the media in some capacity. The author clearly adores his two little girls, and he paints a positive, glowing picture of adoption. I enjoyed reading a book about adoption written from a father's perspective, and it's an engaging and touching read that nicely illustrates just how many of us are impacted by adoption in some way and how surprising and incredible adoption can be. At the same time, I think the author really glosses over some of the deeper, more complicated issues inherent to adoption. True, he tells some stories tha... moret don't turn out so well, but he doesn't go at all in-depth about the challenges and complexities involved. There are definitely better books out there for understanding adoption from a bigger, more objective perspective, if that is your goal; this is a valuable and readable book if your goal is to get one father's perspective.
review 2: I really thought I would love this book. And I really wanted to love this book. However, I really did not love this book. His writing style annoyed me -- it was patronizing and obvious and self-righteous and his parentheticals were unnecessary and not funny. I question whether his interviewees actually approved of him including certain personal details. In general, the adoption stories were nice. I was annoyed that the people featured were basically all his friends and therefore many of them were semi-famous people; it did not seem like a good representation of adoptive families. After each story about someone else he talked about his own children -- at best this was awkward and tedious, at worst he seemed defensive or rationalizing. I don't really know the purpose of this book. less

Lots of touching vignettes though I would have liked to hear more of his story. Almost four stars.

Insipid, hollow. Full of sweetness and love, sure, but not useful for me.
