review 1: Audio VersionWhat should have been an intriguing and salacious story was sadly repetitive, agonizing, and boring. It seems like a literal transcription of interviews with Scotty Bowers. While he obviously has many talents, story telling/writing is not necessarily one of them. This would have been better handled if someone with more biographies under their belt turned it from old man chatter to riveting and fun stories. Much of the book sounds like someone reading from Wikipedia: I can look up the movies that certain people made myself! There are way too many lists, and overuse of certain phrases: "I don't exactly recall," "such as," "good friend," and so many more. The section regarding his childhood and his multiple molestations is upsetting in it's tone. I feel like peopl... moree should be warned. As for the audio aspect, I enjoyed the reader, but his voice reminded me of the kind of of guy who reads the audio version of something like "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People," which took some of the drama and sexiness out of an already bland book.
review 2: Full Services is a "full" account of lots of unexpected sexual activity in Hollywood post-WWII - most of it gay. It can be fun to read about the sexual proclivities of movie stars you've admired - but after page after page after page, it all becomes a little banal and not really all that revealing. And did we really need to know what Charles Laughton liked on his sandwich? There's a few passages in the book that just seem gratuitous and prurient - as if the author is getting a thrill out of telling "scandalous" stories that may or may not be entirely true. For the most part, I didn't have any trouble believing the lascivious tales about Cary Grant, Randolph Scott, Tony Perkins, Vincent Price, James Dean, Rock Hudson, Tyrone Power and Montgomery Clift. C'mon, we've all known on some level that these guys had private lives that probably didn't gel with the studios' well-constructed bios. So not much new here, but still entertaining. The only thing that stretches the credibility of the author for me is he didn't include one photo of himself with all the famous folks he rubbed shoulders with. Not one. They hung out together all the time, socialized, slept together, partied - and yet not a single photo is presented of him with any of one of the many celebrities he either bedded or hooked up with someone else. The book's good for a light read, even a quick scan through parts, but don't expect anything profound or particularly historically significant, either about the movie stars, sexual mores of the times, the studios or the movies they made. less

Probably a shame I don't know half the people he's talking about.
Amen
Interesting, but I trust about 15% of it.
