My Thoughts:
Jennie Pickett loves lending a helping hand to folks in need, including finding natural ways of healing with herbs and oils. When the opportunity arises to care for an elderly woman, utilizing the medicinal knowledge she has, Jennie takes the chance. But when her patient passes away, Jennie’s dreams of becoming a doctor start to take flight.
All She Left Behind is my first read of Jane Kirkpatrick’s works and I found it diving deeply into the emotional depth of humanity. Jennie’s life is not filled with an overabundance of sweet things, in fact, she’s surrounded by alcohol and drug abuse, heavily discriminated against based on her gender, and suffers from physical abuse. Despite that, she persists in pursuing her dream of helping people.
The romance, to me, was far-fetched. Mostly, because my mind had a hard time grasping the age difference between Jennie and Josiah and their supposed romance. I realize this was a more common occurrence back then, but I couldn’t come to terms with it. Overall, I wasn’t too keen on this story as it was a bit too heavy-handed for me, but I tend to enjoy novels that are more light-hearted in nature to begin with.
