review 1: This is perhaps the best book about war that I've ever read. It's definitely on par with Sebastian Junger's WAR, and Parnell's take on his role, his men, and the events he faced in Afghanistan is fascinating and enlightening. I've always had a ton of respect for soldiers, but this book took that respect up an additional notch. The writing is excellent, the "story" is riveting, and the characterization is better than the character building in most novels. Highly recommended!
review 2: I'm not very verbose, but I have to say this has to be on of the best books on Afghanistan. It is right up there with Sebastian Junger's War and Jake Tapper's Outpost. This book is dark and gritty, inspiring and emotional. There were parts that deeply disturbed me, parts where I la... moreughed out loud, andparts where I had to put the book down because I had tears in my eyes. Sean Parnell poured his heart and soul into this book. He communicated his struggles, heart aches, ups and downs and his humanity in vivid and stark colors. This was an awesome read. less
