SIDE NOTEWhile reading this book I became aware that this is kind of a spin off series, it comes from Amanda Hocking’s other book series switched which focuses of the trylle kingdom and not the Kanin. Even thought it is a spin off the book it fine by itself as they give you all the backstory and information on the other kingdoms it can be a stand alone series if you so chose it to be.
Review First ThoughtsThe plot line of this book so far is straight forward without a lot of fillings, more books I read tend to give way to much information on little things like describing how one curtain is a mixture of twenty different shades of blue and what the fabric is. This book gives you the right amount of details by describing the city and the people so we can enjoy the story more than boring charters. From the halfway point we have been given the main character and her group of friends, a budding love interest, and a complicated villain. The main problems seems to be the kidnapping of the changelings, so from the half way point I will say this book is moving along nicely without too many speed bumps to slow us down.
The characters are some that I am still working out but it seems to be just a normal group of high school based personalities. Bryn is one who is trying not to fall in love with her boss but s also fighting a darkness in her heart blaming herself for her fathers almost death and wanting nothing but revenge on Konstantin. She also sees herself as a misfit and an outsider but she wants nothing more than to become a hogdragen. Ridley her boss is starting to show her that he cares for her on more than a work relationship basis. Tilda and Ember, Bryn’s two best friends are some of your average best friend characters. Ember being carefree and outspoken like a social butterfly, while Tilda is level headed and a clam spirit who will never go against the king or her orders but can also be a monster is one of her friends are in danger.
For the half way mark I am going to say this book is great the story is coming along nicely and its keeping my interest. I already know so much about the characters personalities and their back stories so I will say that i’m enjoying reading this book and it feels like the rest of the book is set up for the main climax now that we have gotten all the characters out of the way.
Final ThoughtsThe plot in this book seems to be one that could take book number two and put it into book one because the cliff hanger at the ending is like the publisher wanted the book done like that day and Amanda Hocking said “here ya go” Then finished writing the book later and then thought it sold good so ill make this book number two. Now I haven’t gotten to read but number two but I am hoping it is more put together than the first one.
I cannot say that I hated or Loved the book because I really did neither, I was simply enjoying the read and I would like to save my judgement until I have read book two. I can say this book held my interest so that is a plus, because that is what a book is meant to do keep you hooked into it.
The characters are just characters in a book to me so far like I still have no attachments to any of them and I would feel nothing if they died so that is a negative point there. Bryn I can relate to on her love level with Ridley trying not to love him because she knows it will not end will and they really shouldn’t because of work. I do think she blames herself far too much and has a very hotheaded temper other than that she just bland, a generic female hero.
The ending of this book wasn’t a let down per say but it wasn’t what I was expecting when I first started it but after making it to about 3/4 I could tell I was going to be lead to a cliff because my pages were thinning fast and my answers were still growing my the words.
I will say read this book if you want a nice fantasy book with very faint action but a lot of love drama and if you do not care to read a series and cliff hangers. If you want a quick read and not a series you should look else where because this book is not for you.
I personally will be reading the second book because this book did hold my interest and I am still invested in the story.
