review 1: Huck Runs Amuck, written by Sean Taylor and illustrated by Peter Reynolds, is about a mountain goat who loves to eat just about everything, but is most favorite are flowers. He loves the way the petals melt on this tongue but the problem is all the other mountain goats like flowers too. All of the fields are empty except for one tiny spot on top of a cliff. As Huck attempts to get there he tumbles down and lands in a small pond outside of Ms. Tuppleton's house. As he gets to his feet, Huck sees her flowery underwear hanging on the clothes line and goes for a bite. Her German Shepard runs Huck off the yard and he lands in boxes outside Mr. Hartwig's store. Down the road, Huck spots Mr. Watson with a bouquet of flowers for his wife. Huck heads to the flowers when a train com... morees by and whips him off the bridge. Over toward the park he sees Melissa Spooner's hat full of beautiful flowers. As he runs over toward her the wind picks up the hat and sends it to the top of the church spire. He jumps onto the church and begins to climb. Then he notices something that will change his mind and make him the hero of the town. The author chose an interesting way to write this story. The text I written in the perspective on a third person on looking the events as they are happening. Question phrases like, "He is not going to eat them is he?" allows an interaction between the audience and the characters in the story. Also terms like "OH NO!" are emphasized and bolded to stand out while reading along. Especially for young readers, these techniques help engage the audience and makes reading fun. The illustrator did an incredible job with capturing the emotion in this story. Obviously the main character is a little wacky, but between the images and the story line, the audience can't help but love him. Huck has silly facial expressions and clumsy accidents that will make children laugh. He has goofy front teeth and a long white beard. His tongue always seems to be hanging out the side of his mouth. These details are what children are looking for in a book. Fun, silly, entertaining, yet relatable.
review 2: Huck is a goat, so naturally, all he thinks about is eating. But while other goats will settle for eating cardboard boxes (which taste like boring afternoons to Huck), wooly gloves (which get stuck between your teeth), and bird's nests (which make Huck sneeze), Huck prefers flowers. Lots and lots of flowers. His love of flowers leads him on several adventures, where he can't quite sink his teeth into a tasty bouquet. When Huck finally gets his chance, will he dive in or think of others first? The illustrations really help bring this book to life, and the story is great. Kids will love it, because Huck finds himself eating toilet paper and trying to take a bite of someone's underpants. It's a very cute book! less
