review 1: Through boldly colored illustrations, this picture book , takes the reader on the journey of the en, women, and children who marched to Washington on August 28, 1963. It is told through the eyes of a little boy who is marching with his family to hear Martin Luther King Jr. speak. Written in simplistic language, this book carries a strong message and leaves the reading feeling inspired. The boy mentions why they march without clearly stating the obvious issues. Classroom connections include: making this part of a text set that deals with civil rights. Using as a mentor text to show students that even a few carefully chosen words are more powerful than sentences that are long. Students could write about issues that would motivate them to march. Geography could be examined... more to look at the actual routes people took to get to Washington. Marin Luther King Jr. could be studied.
review 2: A story about the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Both the wording and the illustrations are simple, yet show a clear purpose, each phrase coming across as another step on the road to freedom. Possibly the best thing about this story was the fact that it showed people of all colors, gender, and and walks of life marching together as one for something they believed in, which is the inspirational message that should always be carried in any Multicultural book. less
