review 1: Out of the entire series, I think I liked this one the least. It was still quite entertaining, although the main character was not my favourite at all. Also, it slightly felt like the author was getting a little bored of the series at this point. It didn't seem like she was paying as much attention to the book as she paid to the earlier books in the series. Still, it felt great to finish this series.
review 2: So I think this should be a 3.5. I confess I have not read the other books in the series but this book can stand alone. I picked up this novel as I was in a hurry at the library and heard that they were good. I was in the mood for a fast paced, light read and this novel didn't disappoint, but surprised me a bit with the deeper metaphors found inside.Th
... moree novel is the story of Rin a 16 year old young girl who has a gift that sets her apart from everyone else in her family. She must leave her family to find out who she is and how to use this gift. Although the plot follows the Coming of Age archetype and is very prefictable, it doesn't detract from the story. This is truly a character study of Rin.I really appreciated that although Rin is surrounded by characters with supernatural gifts, her gift seems more normal and commiserate to "real life". She struggles to appreciate and then control her gift for good. I also like how the author weaves in the insecurities that many girls and women feel and how Rin overcomes them to discover her real power within. And although Rin survives and triumphs in her "test" she still understands that she needs to develop and find out who she is. I loved the ending, feeling that it was a perfect way for Rin to complete her journey, bucking the societal trends of today. I would highly recommend this book to teenage girls who are struggling to find out who they are. I think it is a great, empowering novel for them. I also recommend it for the not so young parents of those girls, to remind them what it is like to be that age. Finally, for a good, fast read for those of us who remember being in those shoes at one time. less
