The Dark Forgotten

review 1: This was an ok installment into the dark forgotten series. I liked Lore from the previous book. He was a good alpha male in need of his own story. However there were some problems. One of the problems I had with this story, was Talia. She was a good character at the end, but it took WAY too long to tell her back story. If the audience had the whole story up front we would have been much more invested in her as a love interest for Lore. The whole “mystery” surrounding her past distracted me from the love story. There was also way to much of the characters “ thinking” about how much they wanted to be with each other. Come on Authors! Less Thinking , more DOING! Too much “thinking” makes a book bog down and you catch yourself putting it down and checking the TV f... moreor something to watch. Finally , being in love doesn’t have to “wuss” a guy out. I have read plenty of books where the hero falls in love and still maintains his masculinity. I was disappointed that Lore seemed to obsess constantly about Talia and his overwhelming love for her. This wasn’t a bad book but it could have been better. In fact it could have been great! Lore had the potential to be an exceptional hero! The last fourth or so of the book was an exciting thrill ride , if there had been that much action through the entire thing this would have been an excellent book. I would give this a 3.5

You see, Y2K had a completely different meaning to the inhabitants of the world in The Dark Forgotten series. With the coming of the new millennia also came the coming of all those things that existed only in fairy tales and nightmares. Well, they were always there, it’s just now they are upstanding citizens of the world, just like you and me. Well, sorta.In Frostbound, we are introduced to Lore, a fine upstanding member of the community, and also Alpha of the Hellhounds, and at the time of publication, acting sheriff. When evil comes to his town, the hellhound protector half of Lore, and the abilities that come with his being alpha, won’t let him ignore it. When that evil threatens not only his town, but also his female, well let’s just say it gains his complete attention. But this is not your ordinary evil, and it will take all of his power, and that of his friends and family to overcome.And Lore’s lovely lady is English Lit teacher and tutor, Talia Rostova, who also happens to be a vampire. Talia is a newly turned vampire on the run from the one who turned her, against her will I might add. She is still coming to terms with her lot in life when disaster strikes rather close to home, in the form of the murder of her cousin, roommate and best friend, Michelle. While she makes the most likely suspect, being a vampire and all, we know she is innocent and so does Lore. When the truth about her cousin’s murder and the ones responsible are revealed, things get a bit more complicated, and a lot more lethal.So, it turns out that the object of Lore’s nightmares and Talia’s lurid past are one in the same. Either way, this is one evil guy and he’s gone a bit crazy. And on the weirder but true side, his group of merry vamps has paired up with a group of human supremacists, those who normally kill nonhumans outright. Oh and I forgot to mention, Talia was born one of them, and then her maker turned her as an act of revenge and some sort of paranormal kick in the face or something.So, in the end, evil is demolished, HEA is obtained, and we live on for the next installment. I really enjoyed this story line. This is my first Sharon Ashwood book, but it most certainly will not be my last.Notable Scene:Lore had less than a minute to save his people.He charged the enemy, ducking, weaving, leaping the fireballs in a deadly dance. Their ammunition wasn’t infinite, and he was determined to make them waste as much as he could. Every fouled shot was one less chance a hound would die.Twenty seconds spent.The scene was coming at him in a blur of detail: the sharp-edged rubble of the barricade, the startled faces of Belenos’ vampires as they wheeled around to see the red-eyed hound hurtling at them. Lore knew the ones he wanted. If he took out the leaders, the rest would scatter.Thirty seconds.He would have o brave the snipers. He was gambling they only had a few bullets filled with quicksilver. After all, just about every hellhound alive was somewhere in Fairview. Such bullets were a custom-made item.Thirty-five seconds.His pack turned and were following him, but they were far behind. He was moving faster than the sorcerers could take aim. Faster than he could think. Lore let go and let his instincts run.Forty-five. Rifles cracked, the sound blaring against the stone, but he was too fast for them, too.Men swore.That’s right. Do it.Switching the rifles to automatic sacrificed accuracy for speed. It wasted lots of ammo.Lore leaped, spreading his paws wide to catch the leaders in the chest, to crush them to the dirt for putting his pack, his woman, and the city he called home in danger.Fireballs launched, and they were too close to avoid.Poisonous bullets pierced his flank, tearing through flesh and bone.He’d expected it.
