review 1: Experiences of a young girl who is brought up by a grandfather who had forward thoughts regarding women's education, the plight of young widows in the 1940's before India's independence from the British and her later experiences of marrying a tea planter and living amid the forests in Assam are well wriiten. I wish there was more of the tea plantation revolution. Interesting read and I give 4 stars.
review 2: A sweet and beautiful love story set in a romantic environment. I could not get enough of Manik Deb - a playful optimist, smart, witty, courageous, romantic. ... moref the British empire. Before I read this book I had a small desire to visit India. When I finished this book I felt like I'd been to India in a time machine. This story made me hungry to not only visit India but to consume every book I can that tells the stories of this magical place. less
