review 1: How can you give someone's life story less than five stars? I can't. Shyima was sold into slavery at 8 years old by her family in Egypt (circa 1997). Her captors moved to California about two years later and brought her with as their sole servant/slave. Fortunately someone found her mostly hidden presence in the household suspicious and called the authorities and Shyima was rescued around the age of 13. Much of this book is dedicated to how hard it was for her to become an independent woman after her rescue, and the various legal struggles she had to through afterwards. I'm glad she got her happy ending, and its beautiful that she is dedicating her life to help stop human trafficking. I'm glad I purchased this book and hope the meager proceeds from my individual purchase w... moreill help her cause.
review 2: I personally enjoyed the book after the first couple chapters. I found it interesting how the author got really specific in some parts, such as remembering the words someone said to her years ago, “Before I hustled out of the house, The Dad hissed into my ear, “Do not tell them anything, say you do not work for me (Hall 78)”. I also found it enjoyable to learn that Shyima ended up with family and friends that love her. The author explained that she had her friends support for her, “Today I am completely happy and look forward to the many wonderful years with my family and friends (Hall 230)”. Lastly, my absolute favorite part of the book was the author’s reaction to what happened on September 9th 2001. The author explained the real faith of Muslims, “[…] being Muslim was not about destruction but about loving and serving God (Hall 58)”. Overall, there were dragging parts during the book, but I found it enjoyable to look at the world through different eyes. less

A decent memoir of one girl's experience with being a slave in the 21st century.

3.5 stars: her story is very inspiring but the writing itself is not very good

More of a 2.5 for me. The story just dragged a little too much for my liking.
