review 1: FASCINATING AND WELL RESEARCHEDA fascinating and well researched book, containing a detailed history of the role of servants from the Middle Ages onwards.With personal accounts and beautiful photographs from many of the large houses such as Knole house in Kent.The author writes in detail the duties of servants from the hall boy to the butler.A must read for all those with an interest in this subject.ARC courtesy of Anova books and NetGalley
review 2: Dopo aver letto questo saggio parlo con la mia lavatrice e la mia lavastoviglie e le ringrazio di esistere. Chiedo perdono al forno e all'aspirapolvere, per averli dati per scontati. Accendo con reverenza il riscaldamento a gas. Chiarissimo e dettagliato, corredato di belle foto, un saggio che compre l'intero spett... morero della vita della servitù (e, di riflesso, quella delle classi alte) in epoca vittoriana ed edoardiana.Avrei però voluto che, invece di brevi citazioni nel testo (pur gradite) ci fosse qualche biografia, il più completa possibile di servitori realmente vissuti. less
