review 1: 3.5 to 4.0. As West notes in the book description, Malcolm includes information from other books in the Watchers series, so you should read some (if not all) of those: The Watchers Trilogy, The Watcher Chronicles, and Caylin's Story. To me, this one was not as exciting as the Watcher’s or the Watcher Chronicles, but it was better than Caylin’s story. Plot: Anna, Caylin’s descendent, is set to marry her gay best friend Auggie (who is in love with another man) and become the Empress of Cirrus. While she loves Auggie as a friend, she has always dreamed of finding her soulmate, knowing that when she sees that person, the earth will begin to move. On the night before the wedding, Levi, one of the princes of hell, kills Auggie and takes over his body. Levi wants to 1) marr... morey Anna and have a child with her and 2) get his brothers back. When it becomes evident that Anna is in danger, Malcolm arrives to rescue her and … you guessed it … the earth moves. Anna feels like Malcolm is the one who will help her achieve her destiny of defeating the princes and returning their seals to Heaven and of being a good leader to all of her subjects. Malcolm, however, can’t see past his love for Lilly. Characters:Anna knows that she is stronger than most people, but she doesn’t know about many of her other gifts. She learns more about herself and her true purpose throughout the books, and she accepts it with little complaint. She was strong, sweet, wise, practical and romantic, which is often a rare combination in female heroines. She makes it easy to root for her.Malcolm didn’t seem very Malcolm-like to me. He lacked some of the sarcastic wit that we’ve seen so much of in all of the other books. That was actually one of the things that I had come to appreciate about him. In Caylin’s story, we learned about the vulnerability that resulted from his unrequited love for Lilly. This book provides more detail; the biggest difference is that at times, in this book, he is just plain mean. We know from what he says that he is drawn to Anna, and there are situations that would indicate that he was, but for some reason, I didn’t see him struggling with his feelings as much as I thought I would have. Anna was raised by Andre Greco, who was Malcolm’s best friend. In this one, Jered is Malcolm’s sidekick. I found that interesting considering how much Malcolm hated Jered in Caylin’s story. I always liked Jered, and truth be told, it seemed more to me like he and Anna should have gotten together. (Hint, hint, S.J. West: I’d like to read more about Jered finding happiness.)Auggie was sweet while he was there, but once he’s taken over by Levi, he is a total douche. There’s not really much more to say about that. The biggest surprise is Lucifer. In this book, he acts much like he did with Jess, and we find out why when we learn what he’s been doing since the last battle. Writing:There were several spelling/punctuation/grammatical errors. Lots of homophones (an example of one is they’re instead of their), possessives without apostrophes, and plurals with apostrophes. They could be distracting at times. In terms of content, West says that if this book were a movie, it would be rated R. While we know that Malcolm does like him some sex, and Anna talks about wanting to know what it’s like to have sex, I felt like there were more “adult situations” in the other books. The Bottom Line:I really like West’s characters, and I appreciate how she adds to the stories, so we can learn more about the individuals involved. I would have liked to have seen more passion (either physical or emotional) because Malcolm’s just a passionate guy, albeit good or bad passion. Things start to turn around by the end, and there is a cliffhanger ending. I look forward to seeing where things go from here.
review 2: Unfreaking believable ending! Where is book 2 & 3 and 4 ......love this series!A few months back, I was searching for something different to read because I didn't want to read the same old YA Romance stories. I needed a different genre so I tried out SJ West's Watchers Trilogy. Well, I found out there was more series that continued and so I read "The Watchers Chronicles" which consisted 4 books in that series. I was surprised that there were actually more that continued with the previous characters and found "Devoted & Timeless Dulogy". Guess what? I was so psyched that Malcolm had been in all those books and he was finally getting his own series that would be set 1000 yrs later than the first books. I read Malcolm in one setting and I am still in love with this series. Malcolm was my very character and admired how much his love was so devoted to Lilly from the Watchers Series books and throughout the years. In this book, Malcolm is his usual self which is always Hot, Humorous & very Feisty. I fell in love with Anna's character and could see how much of her linage was in her. I was very surprised to find out who her real biological father was so that was unexpected. I felt the emotional pull of heartbreak between Malcolm and Anna, whom one was fighting to win one another's devotion and love while the other one was pushing away and denying that it could never happen. Of course, we have a huge cliffhanger so I cannot wait for Anna's book next. I fell in love with Lucas so I cannot wait for more of that little adorable boy in the next book. After this series and you and want more of Sandra's books, try out her "Harvester Trilogy" which is an Apocalyptic Romance series with action and thrills. I loved it just as much! less
