review 1: An honest and humble memoir from one our nation's greatest living soldiers. His account of his career starting from his childhood upbringing through his transformation at West Point to his many assignments leading up to and including his time in Iraq and Afghanistan are full of success and, quite interestingly, failures and setbacks which helped make him a better leader and man. His epilogue was superb, sharing his views on leadership and what it really takes to be a leader today and everyday. His book, like his entire career, is a service to us all.
review 2: I purchased the audio for this book and I highly recommend it! You’ll get a real understanding of what has and is happening in the middle east from General McChrystal‘s book. This is a very serio
... moreus book about life in the military and how a General had to cope with strategically moving the mission(s) forward with all the obstacles that were put in front of him. I had no idea how the Generals treated their soldiers but this General; ate with them, slept with them, went on maneuvers with them; wrote to their families when he lost them…. loved and respected them. More than once I had tears in my eyes with the emotional turmoil and frustrations he had to endure. We lost a warrior in his prime and it is so unnerving to know that our government let him down. He may think he let them down but he didn’t!As a former military wife (husband now retired) I totally understand how General McChrystal and his wife helped each other through tough times. I cheered her on as well! General McChrystal… if you ever read this…please write more books! You had me on the edge of my seat throughout your entire book! less
