review 1: Kafner's interesting and engaging biography of my favorite actor is admiring, respectful and often affectionate, but I would have liked more backstory on Bogie's most important films and more detail on his personal life once he became an A-list star with High Sierra and The Maltese Falcon. This is a fine look at the actor's life and work but anyone wanting a more insightful and in-depth study should look elsewhere.
review 2: Somewhat superficial but still pretty complete bio of Humphrey Bogart. Doesn't really get into much depth as to the "why" of the man, but does a good job of describing his life and times. And Kanfer also attempts to explain his enduring popularity. Bogart, who grew up in a privileged atmosphere, took a while to find his craft, but once he
... morebecame an actor, he worked very hard at it. Appearing in dozens of plays before his first movie, and plenty of movies before cracking the big time, he died in a remarkable number of ways on screen for such a monstrously popular actor. His real life dying scene was hard to read, as he wasted away from esophageal cancer, but his life and enduring legacy remain untarnished and unmatched. Yeah, I love Casablanca :) less

Somehow managed to make Humphrey Bogart boring, which should be impossible.

Very good, if somewhat superficial biography of Bogart.
