review 1: I won't rate it because I know I won't finish it, and that's not fair in this case. It probably gets better. This is a gritty, multi-layered meta-memoir recommended to me by Overdrive (Ah, OD, your algorithms disturb me). I figured I'd read a few pages, get a flavor for it and decide. Halfway through the book and a few hours later, I decided...so there's that. But, overall, the author's memoir juxtaposed with the true crime account just isn't working for me.I know I've read articles by this author before and I'd explore any newer fiction books he pens. He's definitely intriguing. Possibly, his Adderall angle will stick with me when considering medications for my children. But for now, I'm done. I Wikipediad the case to find out how it ended, and returned the e-b... moreook.
review 2: i didn't want it to end. elliot marries a compelling crime narrative and brutal self-reflection together in thrilling ways, always weaving in tangents but probably with more coherence than most manage with clean-cut chronology. i've read complaints about narcissism, from readers bewildered that a writer would have the audacity to make a piece of crime journalism all about himself. but i find that weird, given elliot's transparency on the matter. that's what this book is about exactly; the narratives we craft to justify and rationalise our behaviour, to mythologise ourselves. there is no truth, only interpretation. less
