review 1: I have no objections to what many readers perceive as the over-terseness and emphasis on academic subjects in this book. It's Hawking's life-story; let him tell it however he wishes to. In fact, an argument can be made that the concentration on facts, interspersed as it is with short humorous remarks, provide an interesting reflection of Hawking's thought process, his worldview and even philosophical inclinations. That said, however, I think that Chapter 11 ("Time Travel") needs some editing. Up to that point in the book, Hawking explains all the theoretical physics required to understand his ideas or their context by providing just enough background. When discussing A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME he even expresses mild regret that a few technical items could have been better exp... morelained in that book. But when we get to Chapter 11, bam!--he suddenly throws all that out the window, and produces several pages of extremely dense physics, riddled with highly technical terminology that he barely--or in some cases, not at all--pauses to explain. I have a physics background, so let me be clear, I don't mind difficult material. But the change in tone and approach is abrupt. And not all of the detail is needed to get to Hawking's key findings on time travel (though admittedly it does better illuminate the subtle and intricate patterns of his intellectual process). A bit of this problem persists in Chapter 11 ("Imaginary Time"), but the prose becomes considerably more reasonable again right towards the end. So, based on that, I'm giving this book four stars, rather than the five I was hoping I could.

Interesting, brief autobiography, with some attention to his scientific views and discoveries.

Super brief, 2 hr. long audiobook. Not very much personal information given.

It is titled a brief history but it felt forced and rushed...
