review 1: In the end I really enjoyed this book. I went back and forth between loving and hating it as I read it. The author goes off on tangents some related and relevant and some that seemed utterly pointless. In the end, I was not only well educated but had a whole new outlook on animal rescue.I did design a research/journal club and public speaking course around this novel. I loved how broad and researched the book is.I know I do not have the where-with-all to do large scale animal rescue... my heart would break BUT I'm glad that there are people like Steven and Joy who do and support their work wholeheartedly!
review 2: I wanted to like this book. I really did. And the parts about moving to New Mexico, setting up a dog rescue operation, and the dogs themselves
... more are quite well-written.But the turgid philosophical ramblings are complete nonsense. Jejune, even. Arguing from emotion, Kotler has decided that the human race is a blight upon the Earth and needs to be downsized. While the subject of ethics in the treatment of animals is interesting, Kotler's simplistic treatment is most infuriating because of its shallowness. In particular, Kotler cites many others, including scientific studies, but does so in a way that is clearly cherry-picking and not true to the intent of those he cites. As a scientist, I find this kind of argument distasteful and dishonest.Read for the stories, but skip the philosophy. less

As much philosophy, psychology, mysticism, and theory as dog rescue. Love it!
