review 1: This book is okay, depending on what you're looking for. To call it a biography of Hugh Hefner is a bit of a misnomer. The book is MUCH more about the history of Playboy magazine and the social, political, and financial issues surrounding its publication. The 10 percent or so actually dedicated to Hefner as an individual didn't contain anything not covered in the E! True Hollywood Story (literally). I expected more about Hefner given the book was advertised as his biography. However, it was still an interesting read.
review 2: I started this book in hopes of reading some juicy, scandalous stories about the infamy in the Playboy mansion. And there is plenty of that in the book. Including an embarrassing accidental swallowing of a "toy " by Hef.But there is
... more also detailed analysis of how the magazine helped to shape our national values. They helped to usher in the consumer values, love of leisure, and pursuit of self fulfillment that started in the 50's and has continued ever since. The book also covers the political battles that the famous publisher fought. Sometimes from all sides of the spectrum. Like in the 80's when he was fighting Reagan conversatives on the right, and radical feminists on the left simultaneously. Good book. 454 pages. Reads well. less
