review 1: Stuart Mclean has embedded himself in my mind as Canada's great modern storyteller. I will always remember listening to his one hour Vinyl Cafe radio program on CBC, driving somewhere or another with my Dad. This book has all of the heart and humour that Stuart is gifted with, and his stories fill me with deep happiness and nostalgia. Each story will draw you in, and will surely pull at your heartstrings after every sentence. Stuart Mclean is a gifted and powerfully talented artist and this book is highly enjoyable.
review 2: I took an English course at university where the professor told us he had given up writing because of a collection of short stories by some author who's name I can not remember. He thought he could never write anything as good, so why try.... more I thought he was crazy for two reasons. First, he made us read the stories, and they were horrid. A blind brain adled monkey with a gimped writing hand could do better. Second. I felt then, and still do, that excellent writing should inspire you to write if anything. There was a point in reading this collection of Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe stories where I almost understood that English professor. I had just finished a story and thought, "I could never write anything that good." For a few fleeting seconds I was were the professor lived. Then I thought, "I love reading so much, I should try writing again."Thanks Stuart! Your stories are inspirational in many ways. less
