review 1: What are you afraid of? Dave and Moreley's Toronto family have confronted all types of fears which are shared in these Vinyl cafe short stories about germs, dolls, UFOs, sewer monsters, reptiles, a mummified fish head, an ice flow breakup, a cycling and treadmill adventure, the fear of a parent's or librarian's reprimand and more.There is a good mix of scares, thrills, and laughs which range from the normal to the absurd and speculative. The first two or three stories made me wonder if this was a compilation of scary stories but afterwards the stories take on a lighter tone. The stories that have stuck with me after reading are Hello Monster, McCauley's Mountain, Attack of the treadmill, and The Black Beast of Margaree. Stuart McLean has taken the everyday and made it s... morecary.
review 2: Besides the characters and their generally humourous situations, I love the fact that I can pick up the Vinyl Cafe books, read one story, and then return later when I feel like reading another one. That's exactly what I did with this book...except that the "later" ended up being a few months. For the most part I really enjoyed this book. There are a few stories that really stand out: Code Yellow comes to mind, as does Midnight in the Garden of Envy. Some of the stories felt a little bit pieced together, and not up to McLean's usual standard, but for the most part, a good collection. This volume seemed a bit more melancholy in nature than some of the previous Vinyl Cafe books; Dave in particular is often looking back wistfully at his childhood and sharing reminiscences with his kids.
