review 1: This is an important book, particularly due to the current situation regarding the movie "The Interview" and the hacking of Sony corporation. It gives an insider view into the North Korean regime, seen not through the eyes of defectors, but through the eyes of University-age children of North Korea's elite.It is eye opening to read about the fake reality under which these kids must live. It is sobering to see how the repression they live with leads these kids to lie to others and to themselves. They can't help it.We are fortunate to live in a country where we have the freedom to think for ourselves.

I hoped to read about current conditions in the DPRK in order to better understand current w... moreorld events.I was not disappointed. The book portrays a people completely controlled by an overbearing administration that starves them, uses them as slave labor, offers no possibility of advancing to a better life, yet inculcates into them a belief that their country and its Great Leader set the standards by which the rest of the world is measured.This book should be required reading in high schools. it would help our young people appreciate what they have in this country. The thought of living as a North Korean is depressing, to say the least. I have a much better understanding of how DPRK members believe the things they profess. I'm once again amazed at the ability of people to hold to completely opposite beliefs as both true.Ms. Kim has written a classic. I recommend it highly. less
