review 1: I read this memoir after finishing the author's novel, Paris Was the Place.I loved the novel, and I was so happy to discover that I felt the same about the memoir-- I realized what a genuine voice Conley has in both fiction and non-fiction. And to hear her talk about writing that novel while living in China made everything more connected. I can't decide which I liked better-- the memoir or the novel, but it's fair to see I loved them both.
review 2: I enjoyed the author's impressions of China, though I think those could have been expanded upon. I got a bit weary of the constant references to her cancer during the last half of the book. As a two-time breast cancer survivor, I just wanted her to stop dwelling on the cancer and focus on her family, the incredible
... more experience of living in China, and her future. I felt she should have either made this book about her experience of moving to China with her husband and two small sons, or her experience with being diagnosed with breast cancer while living in China and how she dealt with that. Trying to combine the two didn't work for me. less
