review 1: I enjoyed this book very much, which is interesting because I don't usually read fantasy. But I stayed up till 4 in the morning reading it -- I didn't want to put it down. It had great messages about how humans are treating the earth and our fellow creatures. Just as in the book humans treat their close relatives, the harpies, so horrifically, we humans on earth treat our close relatives -- the apes and all nonhuman animals -- incredibly horrifically. Same goes for their and our treatment of the planets on which we live. The things done to the harpies are done to animals all the time. The book makes one think. (For example, though this wasn't what Klaus was talking about, we forcibly rape cows so they can have babies, so they will produce milk for our milk products. The ap... moreparatus they use is even called a rape rack. The new baby girls become dairy cows, with the same heinous conditions as their mothers. The baby boys become veal calves -- who receive unfathomably cruel treatment before their horrible deaths.) Just as in the book there are many good humans who wouldn't personally hurt a harpy -- but never stood up for them, in our society, most humans don't educate themselves about how the animals they eat are raised and die. If they did, they would never want to be part of the perpetration. Through fiction, Susan Klaus holds a mirror up to us as individuals and as a society. She challenges us to think about what we are doing -- to know what we do and then to change it -- to actually choose, instead of clinging to willful ignorance -- before it is too late.
review 2: I usually don't review books, but fell in love with this one. It starts as a mystery. What are these winged creatures. Are they good or bad? Moves to forbidden love with the same passion as the Thorn Birds. And the second half of the book is on the edge-of-your-seat action, the realistic horrors capable of mankind, and a race of survive. It had a great underlining environmental message, but most of all, this book has Shail, the golden harpy. A true fantasy male that's to die for. less
