review 1: Rating: 3.5/5Mist thrusts us into a modern-day world just starting to feel the influence of figures of Norse mythology, fascinating us from the beginning with gods and goddesses perhaps lesser known than those of their Greek or Roman counterparts, and all the more intriguing for it. As is often the case with first installments of urban fantasy series, this book focuses primarily on world-building and setting up the epic war that hovers ominously on the horizon, leaving us faltering just a touch with some of the Nordic names and terminology which are both hard to pronounce and remember. Additionally, given infamous trickster god Loki is the primary villain, we know from the onset that Mist’s battle with him is not one that will be resolved in this first book, and without ... morea smaller villain or story arc to provide a concrete conclusion, there’s definitely a feeling of unfinished business when we reach the last page.Despite those drawbacks, Mist proves to be a heroine with infinite potential, the prologue showing us in brutal detail just how vulnerable she can be physically even with the advantages granted to her as a valkyrie, while the rest of the story gives us a glimpse at her strength and her fighter’s spirit. There’s the barest hint of a romance between her and an elf with more secrets and lies in his life than we can almost keep track of, their initial antagonism and slow emotional thaw toward one another piquing our curiosity as we can’t help but wonder how things will continue to develop once a light is shone into the elf’s dark and shadowy corners.
review 2: Mist just wants to have a normal life with her normal boyfriend. However, when you are a Valkyrie, yes one of those warrior maidens who escorts fallen warriors to Valhala, that is probably not going to happen. Mist has been living in San Francisco trying to create the normal life she has always dreamed up. She has a nice boyfriend named Eric and things appear to be going well. Now anyone knows the minute that happens something is going to come along and mess things up. And boy do things change. Mist is attacked by Frost giants in the park, meets an elf who is pretending to be a homeless person, and discovers that her boyfriend Eric is none other than the Norse trickster god Loki. Loki wants to destory Midgard (that's Earth to us) while the other Norse gods are trapped in some kind of alternate dimension from which they cannot escape. Of course, Mist cannot stand for that. The elf she rescues is Dainn who has issues of his own , who reveals to Mist her true parentage. Mist has always believed that she is a Mortal who became a Valkyrie and gained magical abilities. She is more than she ever knew. Her mother is the goddess Freya, and her father was an ice giant. Mist has the power to defeat Loki, but it is locked up deep inside and she must learn to tap into her natural talents. The characters are complex and interesting and are not always what they appear to be. Mist is an interesting heroine, not always likeable, but admirable. Fans of urban fantasy that features a strong female protagonist will find much to enjoy in Mist and her adventures. Thor fans will also find much to like in the use of the Norse gods. A good start to what I hope will be a series. less

Believe it or not a bit TOO much world building in this one. It really slowed the book down.
