review 1: I had read the middle book some time ago, Susan Mallery is pretty much my go-to for brainless, cheerful, happy romance with just enough sex thrown in. I always rip through her books, and always end up with a smile...but also always end up feeling like I just had ice cream for dinner. Not really filling, definitely not healthy, but tasty at the time! These books don't disappoint except in one respect, they're 1 book, not 3 (or actually 4, more on that in a minute). Each book builds on and is so intertwined with the other I STRONGLY recommend reading them in order and not deviating. You really won't understand the latter two books without reading the first, and the third book relies HEAVILY on the first two. So, read out of order at your peril. Here's what I meant by 4. ... moreAbout 1/3 of the 3rd book was used setting up Dani's romance. Which is fine, she starts out married and getting divorced in the first book, has a terrible fling with a guy who turns out to be married in the second, and starts a friendship with an ex-priest that she runs away from as soon as she finds out he used to be a priest in the third. Sure, great, but...where's her story? Oh, it's another book I'll have to track down and probably wait for 4 months to get from the library. That's fine, but THIS IS ALL REALLY ONE BOOK. Either make it one book, or don't put half the plot from one book into the previous!Having the scene where Reid meets/hires Lori in the second book was super disorienting for me when I started the third.Since I'm already all about the spoilers, I should also say that their initial sexual encounter felt super-forced to me and I was seriously cringing knowing that in the real world sleeping with someone you've known for a week is a great recipe to never ever hear from them again. Reid was already slutty, but Lori wasn't...just a giant shudder from me.
review 2: These contemporary romances took me by surprise. There's a lot of complexity in the backstory that is handled deftly, and some truly interesting characters. There are, of course, many, many excellent romance authors out there, but for a reason I haven't been able to pinpoint yet, these stood out for me.My only quibble is that the endings seem rushed, and in general the timeline feels compressed. I can see Reid evolving and changing, but the transformation is so big, it feels (I'm using this word again) rushed. The same is true of Gloria's turn-around. But overall, I liked the couples and the way they interacted. Oh and: I grew up in the restaurant business, and the details felt pretty much on target to me. I am wondering though, if Penny never has a bad-sauce day.On a personal note: I'm writing this on Christmas morning at 3 am. Because I can't sleep. So forgive me my typos, etc. less
