review 1: Extremely well-researched and witty. I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. I learned a lot about how technology actually makes our lives a lot more complicated in many ways and leads us down some unfortunate paths in terms of lost connectivity to other people and the life around us as opposed to the internet. I highly suggest it, as it will change your perceptions on modern life and lead to you maybe put down the computer and take a technology vacation once in a while. The writing style reminded me a bit of "How to Be a Woman" but it was a lot more informative and less crude. I also enjoyed the references to Walden.
review 2: This book was recommended by a blogger I read. It sounded interesting so I got it for the Nook. I devoured it - Thi
... mores is a non-fiction story written by a woman (single mother of 3 teenagers) who declares a "media/technology" fast in her house for 6 months. It is not just a story of how she and her children made out with the fast, it is also a book with tons of quotes from a variety of sources on what media/technology is doing to us and our families. If I had heard that it was a scholarly book I probably wouldn't have read it but in reading it I loved it. Maushart has a way of blending the anecdotes of family life with the reference work and her asides to the reader that make it an easy and engaging read.I feel like recommending it to everyone I know because it brought up so many issues that I (as an older person) see with how much media/technology is being used and how. Example: having 600 "friends" - what does that mean? How does it affect our lives/our children? or "multitasking" using a computer, an Ipod, a cellphone all while "doing" work or homework? If you get into the book and are very interested in the subject Maushart has a very exhaustive bibliography listing all her sources. I am planning to find some of the books she mentioned and continue reading, with a 14 year old granddaughter and another grandchild on the way this is a subject to be well informed about. less

Very interesting & enjoyable read re: technology addiction and taking a break. Moderation is key.

Lighthearted and interesting about living life irl rather than mediated via computational tools.

It was an interesting idea. I just found the writing rather boring.
